Soldier should rest in peace: Relative

30/06/2008 9:47:00 AM
THE relative of a Goulburn soldier buried at Fromelles in France believes the mass grave should be excavated but the dead allowed to rest in peace.

Frank Murray is a collateral descendant of Private Daniel Bernard Ryan who was killed during the battle of Fromelles between allied and German forces on July 19, 1916.

The Canberra man says Private Ryan is buried in the mass grave currently being excavated by archaeologists to verify soldiers' identity. The Post featured his story last Monday.

"Once the excavation is done I think the soldiers should be left there. I hope it will be blocked off and a plaque placed to mark the fact that they are buried there," Mr Murray said.

For the full story, please see Monday's Goulburn Post, available from our front office in Auburn St, or at all leading newsagencies across the Goulburn area.
